WHY US?

Why book your Quebec Labrador Hunt with Jack Hume Adventures Inc?

Highest Ratio Of Camps And Spare Camps/Hunters Booked:

Jack Hume being one of the first pioneer outfitters to offer caribou hunting expeditions in northern Quebec was able to choose some of the very best locations along the various migration routes frequented by the Quebec/Labrador caribou. Knowing that caribou don’t always migrate at the same time of the season and also knowing that caribou can and often will change their migration routes from one year to the next our outpost camps have been strategically located throughout our territory. Some of our camps are as far as 300 miles apart and extend from Labrador to the other side of the Delay River! We maintain a minimum of at least 3 spare camps to every camp booked. Our spare camps are continually monitored with the use of our Cessna 185 and by placing spare guides equipped with satellite phones (for communication) in camps that seem to stand the best chance of getting “hit” by migrating caribou. These guides who are otherwise know as “Scouts” notify us as soon as they see any sign of caribou so that we can then move any hunters who may warrant being moved at that point. Each week we locate 5 groups of hunters into our 5 most productive camps. Our other 15+ camps are monitored in order to relocate our hunters if and when needed.

  ACCESS TO BOTH HERDS

Although Quebec has two major herds of caribou numbering nearly 1 million caribou which consist of both the Leaf River herds and the George River herds, very few outfitters can actually lay claim to having access to these 1 million caribou. The truth of the matter is very few outfitters have camps spread apart far enough to intercept both herds. Jack Hume Adventures not only has access to both herds but depending on which herd is more predominant will determine which float plane base we actually fly our clients to and from. We have access to the Leaf River herds through a base in Caniapiscau (Lac Pau) and we have access to the George River herds through our base in Schefferville. We have certainly been doing this long enough to know that caribou can be unpredictable at times. Forest fires, wolves, hunting pressure and weather patterns can all force caribou to change their migration routes. Over the years one herd or the other always seems to be healthier and more numerous than the other. We quite simply don’t like to take any unnecessary chances. You don’t have to ponder which herd would be better to hunt off when choosing to hunt with us as we look after that detail for you. Why depend on just one herd if you can have access to either of the herds which in return increases your chances of success? In the past all our clients left from our float plane base in Schefferville however some of our camps intercepting the Leaf River caribou were well over 200 air miles from Schefferville (which is not only very costly but made for a really long ride on a float plane!) These same camps are less than 100 miles from Caniapiscau, therefore saving time in the floatplane and giving you more time for hunting while allowing us to be price competitive with our competitors who choose to hunt off just one of the two herds!

  MOBILITY

It wouldn’t do us any good to advertise that we will move hunters warranting a move to a more productive camp if we didn’t have the aircraft in order to do so. Jack Hume Adventures has had a long term relationship with one of the largest float plane operators in the world. We maintain an Otter (an Otter is a large float plane capable of carrying 6 passengers with all their gear) on lease during our hunting season with Air Saguenay.  Part of our lease contract with Air Saguenay stipulates that should our Otter become unavailable due to maintenance issues or any other unforeseen event they must provide us with another Otter within a reasonable time frame (2hours). Being that Air Saguenay has more Otters in operation in northern Quebec this has never been an issue. We also own a Cessna 185 float plane. Should a move become warranted due to lack of caribou at your camp and provided we have located caribou at one of our other camps you can rest assured that you will be moved (weather permitting) to that camp without hesitation or complication. Should a medical emergency arise our Cessna is always on call.

  INTEGRITY

While some high volume outfitters lay claim to booking over 1000 clients per year and offer a so called “guaranteed hunt” (which I might add goes against Quebec’s code of ethics) we have decided that it is more important that we continue to offer the quality services that our clients have come to expect from us over the years. Unlike those offering a guaranteed hunt we won’t rush you into shooting the 1st caribou you see and we won’t overcrowd our most productive camps in order to honor such a guarantee. Each of our clients will be treated as a friend amongst friends as we strive off our repeat business. Some of our clients have returned with us over 15 times and while boasting the highest repeat business in the industry at over 80%, we also lay claim to being “the most trusted caribou outfitter in Quebec”. Take a look at any of the hunting forums on the internet or any of the outfitter reviews, call many of our references and you will soon find out that we are without a doubt one of the most reputable outfitters in Canada. We only book 20% of our potential and we only send 6 hunters into 5 of our most productive camps even though we have 25 well equipped camps to choose from. Only under extraordinary circumstances, “when we can’t locate caribou at 5 of our 25 camps”, would we send hunters from another group into your camp in order to give them a chance to get a caribou. Keeping in mind if roles were reversed we would gladly do the same for you!

“Having been involved in this business for the better part of my life and being an avid hunter myself I have grown to understand what our hunters expect from us and I will continue to do my best to provide our hunters with the quality fair chase hunts that we have been known to provide. Our hunters can take pride in the trophies they harvest as we only offer fair chase hunts.” Richard Hume

  The JHA Team:

The Hume’s have been involved with outfitting and guiding hunters on Quebec’s Sub Arctic tundra for over three decades. Jack Hume is truly known as a pioneer in the world of caribou hunting having guided hunters in Quebec since the early 70’s.

Richard Hume grew up in the business and accompanied his father (Jack) for the 1st time in 1981. Richard has returned to the north every season since and over the past 28 years has gained experienced and knowledge in every aspect of the business. Richard has been responsible for managing the business since 1991. In 2003 he took over the family run business from his father allowing Jack Hume his much deserved retirement. Richard is an avid hunter/archer himself and an experienced float plane pilot who is ready, willing and capable of resolving any issues that might arise during your hunt.

Richard’s “right hand man” just happens to be his wife, Amanda!  She has been involved with helping Richard run the business since 2001. Amanda greets all the clients in Montreal and makes sure that any concerns they might have are dealt with immediately. She is responsible for organizing each group of hunters before and after their trip, issues hunting licenses upon your arrival and fills out registration forms on your return. She also makes certain that all the food and/or materials required at each camp is ordered and sent to each of the camps. Amanda actually flies up on each charter flight that departs Montreal with our clients and returns to Montreal with each group of hunters departing after their trip. Should you have any issues left unresolved that you would like to talk about she is always available to listen.
If there were such a thing as a “left hand man” then that position would be held by Doug. Doug is responsible for loading and unloading the aircraft, expediting clients and their baggage to and from the charter flight, general maintenance of all our buildings and vehicles and when Richard is running errands with the Cessna, in search of caribou or visiting one of the camps, Doug pretty much runs the base operation keeping radio watch and making certain that everything runs smoothly. Without a doubt Doug is one of the most reliable and hardest workers involved with the JHA operation and a huge asset.

Our guides have been hand picked and they represent the cream of the crop. Most of them live in small remote villages and when they aren’t working for us they are guiding elsewhere, hunting for their winter meat, fishing off the coast or monitoring their trap lines. Most of our employees have been with us for ten or more years and a few have actually been working with us for over 20 years. They are all safety conscious and they will certainly do their utmost to not only ensure you have a successful trip but also that you enjoy your trip to its fullest. Our cooks were also handpicked from the best available and being from remote villages along Quebec’s north shore they are all accustom to cooking delicious home made meals. For your safety all of our employees have taken courses in 1st aid and CPR in order to maintain a certain degree of safety towards our clients should they become injured or take ill while at one of our camps.

Last but not least our receptionist and secretary. Those of you who decide to book with us will get to know her as Lynda. Lynda has been with us for the past 19 years. She looks after taking phone calls from our Lachute office, takes bookings, does the payroll and she’s also always available to answer your questions even while the rest of us are busy up north!

You can rest assured that if you book a hunt with the Hume’s, you are going to be hunting with people who actually care.

Price Competitive:

Other outfitters who book more than 6 hunters into each camp, have far fewer camps, don’t have access to both herds, have far less experience, don’t have their own aircraft, aren’t an owner/operated family run business, have little or no regard to fair chase ethics, don’t maintain as high a ratio of spare camps to camps booked, don’t move you to a more productive camp “free of charge” and who can’t lay claim to having the highest repeat business in the industry are charging similar amounts for their hunts!

  Success Rate:

We have continually averaged over 95% on bulls throughout the past 25 years. Although some outfitters have advertised higher rates of success few are capable of backing up those success rates.

With that being said I believe success can be measured in many different ways. It is one thing to claim that you have a very high success rate of kill but it is another to claim a very high success rate along with a high success rate of satisfied customers. In our case we dwell on one just as much as the other. It is just as important for us to ensure that our clients are content with our services as it is for us to lay claim to the highest success rate in our industry. Quite frankly I believe we might very well lay claim to both and we do so while maintaining strict fair chase ethics! If you want an excellent chance at harvesting two bulls under fair chase rules and don’t want to be sent to an over crowded camp or pressured into shooting the first bull you see then perhaps we are the outfit you are looking for. We believe a caribou hunt should be an experience you will want to do again in the future, we want you to enjoy your experience. This has been our passion for over 30 years. We take pride in what we do. It is what we do best.

The Humes.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of the price is forgotten.
